Mythical Earth- the baddies

As promised here are the Mythical Earth bad guys. They are still a work in progress and victim to my indecisiveness regarding basing. What you see is various attempts at basing and my general lack of coming to a consensus on this. Plain green , individual, element based, textured etc they stand testament to the ongoing work. So here are the figures. By the way what do you think re basing ?

  1. Is that a Britains baby elephant masquerading as a war elephant ?

    1. Sadly no , it is a hinchcliffe elephant masquerading as a mumakil.

  2. Always good to see these figures. Ahhh the Nazghul's winged mount, I was very fond of mine. Ahh well.

I like the darker, mottled, green on the Uruk Hai better than the bright green or the flocked ones.

  3. The bright green was a product of a cunning plan using coloured sand to base figures. A low point not to be repeated.

  4. Splendid collection Tradgardmastare. What a fine unit of Giants! I only had the one. I agree with Ross on the basing style.

  5. The giants are one of my favourite figures. The patch on their clothes and their clubs are charming.

  6. Yup, plain green bases suit these old figures. Normally I would rant about having individual figures, but the multi basing works well here. I am getting tempted to do some ME figures myself.

    1. Give into that temptation, you won’t regret it!

  7. Very impressive... I thought I had a lot of ME Man Orcs... now I know different! Nice bit of remodelling of the Balrog whip too.

    1. No one needs a broken balrog. Do you game with your ME figures?

    2. Ah well - the odd piece finds its way onto the table - but it's really a 'project' - one of those - that I started a few years ago. The idea was to rebuild an army that I had in the day - and I just got into the habit of buying up models - and before I knew it I had 13 Ringwraiths on flying beasties! Some are harder to get than others - I found the Harad and Southron infantry fairly uncommon, and the cavalry both uncommon and usually broken. I'm 'restoring' some Harad cavalry lancers at the moment.

    3. I look forward to seeing some pictures of them one day. I know what you mean, some of the figures do indeed appear more often for sale. I can’t seem to get hold of orcs , dwarves or hobbits so readily or the goblins in hoods,

    4. I lucked into a find of two dozen Harad infantry and 7 dozen man-orcs a couple of years ago, so I just need to come up with a nice paint scheme for them...

  9. I think the darker green bases work, but also the flocked bases the giants are on. Looks like quite an army! Nice work!

I've been dithering about basing for ages. Most of my minis are on various individual plastic bases. Lately I've been using round bases, but many of my earlier figures are on square bases (just because that's what they came with back in the day). I do like the idea of multi-figure stands for battle games, but I tried removing some minis from their plastic stands in order to affix them directly to small plywood bases. But then you have to decided whether to try to blend them in and texture/flock or pin them to the base or what. And how to get texture and/or paint between them. The other thing I tried was just to glue them with their individual plastic bases onto the plywood bases. That's less work, but is it even worth it? Or should I go for some sort of movement trays (with magnets? as many of my miniatures are also based on washers). Hence, dithering. ha ha

  10. Basing, perennial dilemma. I have tried movement trays but they are so bulky l felt.

  11. I’ve gone with flocked bases for mine, but the mottled green looks pretty good too...
