When a knight...
When a knight won his spurs, in the stories of old,He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand,
For God and for valour he rode through the land.
No charger have I, and no sword by my side,
Yet still to adventure and battle I ride,
Though back into storyland giants have fled,
And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead.
Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed
'Gainst the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed;
And let me set free with the sword of my youth,
From the castle of darkness, the power of the truth.
I liked growling this song out as a schoolboy as it has a real Pilgrims Progress or Blyton Land of Far Beyond quest feel and narrative story to it.
ReplyDeleteChivalry, The Cloak of Romance, the Patron Saint of Scouting, Portugal, England and elsewhere. Name-checked you in https://tabletopscoutingwidegames.wordpress.com/2021/04/23/happy-st-georges-day-to-all-those-fabulous-beasts/
Indeed a song to belt forth, written by Jan Struther , whose work inspired me. A song I used at assemblies and was popular with children and staff.
Delete......and not least Georgia who’s national flag replicates the shield on that picture.
ReplyDeleteAnyway happy St George’s Day. (And Shakespeare day!)
Georgia on my mind indeed.
