Weekday wee trip - St Andrews

Had a lovely trip to St Andrews today. Hadn’t been for ages but really glad to be back. A look round Toppings bookshop, lunch at North Point cafe ( we highly recommend it) at an outdoor table followed by a wander about. An ice cream rounded the day off very nicely indeed. Here are some photos including an interesting mosaic.

  3. Long time since I was in St Andrews. Can you still go through the mine or countermine under the street?

    1. I believe so, though the castle may be currently closed, but I have never done it. A bridge too far for me I’m afraid.

    1. Hello (apologies for jumping in on your blog, Alan),

I don't know the full history of the mosaic, but Polish units trained in Fife and Tayside during world war 2. The armoured division was in the area before going to Normandy.

There are wall plaques in Kinross (which is some 30 miles from St Andrews) which express the thanks of the Poles to the locals during that time for their welcome and support. The words on one plaque are very moving. In nearby Perth (also some 30 miles from St Andrews), there is a Polish cemetery which has part dedicated to the Polish soldiers.

I would guess that the mosaic is part of a commemoration to or by Polish forces.

  5. Alan,
I think we've been to St Andrews way back in 2015 April-May...I've lost all my photos from that overseas journey- so I appreciate seeing your photos to-day. Cheers. KEV.
