Towards a game using Alexander’s Toy Soldiers set in circa 1689 using Table Top Battles on a grid..

At the recent Woking 54mm wargames day ( see http://mikelewis.info/littlewars/?p=911) l really enjoyed playing in Anthony Morton’s ECW game. The figures and terrain looked great and the Table Top Battles Rules served us well. On my return home I began to plan using the rules for later 17th Century Battles. I began to plan what size of bases and movement trays might work-

I tried various dimensions,  options and shape of bases but in the end was not satisfied with the look of the game. I did wonder if I even needed any bases/trays so set up a trial skirmish just to see the look achieved. Alexander’s Toy Soldiers are bigger than 54mm so I decided on three infantry/ dismounted dragoons to a square and two cavalry to a square. I took some photos and was pleased with the results. Let me know what you think. I will have a play of 5he game next week...

  1. They look really good. I think that the spacing is about right.

Great figures. The trees work well with them too. I really like the sentinel cocking his musket.

    1. Thanks. The figures haven’t been out for some time and I forgot how elegant they are.

  3. Great to see them back on the table again, they really are splendid and shiny toy soldiers from an unusual period.
Can't advise on multiple bases. As you know, I prefer single basing and have ditched any remaining multiple bases for single or tuppenny bases that I could put into movement trays in the future should I wish to.

    1. Thanks. They were a couple of pounds or less from Amazon. Great value I think.

  8. Hi Alan, I can only echo everyone else's appreciation of your figures! They look great regardless of the set up. What size squares are you using? I think a group of singe-based figures in a square looks great, possibly because ATS and similar figures are too well sculpted and painted not to be on single bases showing off the wonderful detail.

    1. I am pleased with the single figure look. I think it suits the ATS very well indeed. The squares Anthony are four inches.

  10. Beautiful figures but way out of my price range if I’m reading their website right. £17 per figure?
I keep looking at Table Top Battles Second Edition but without a review I’m loathe to drop the money to buy a copy. How would you rate the rules?
