Cool pics for hot weather
Thought that these pictures might make you think cool thoughts in this over hot weather…
I’m not a skier and don’t know why but that seems to be the way the Norwegians did it right back to the early medieval period and before. Alan Tradgardland
In the middle of a heatwave like this, it's hard to believe winter will ever happen again, isn't it? Nice shots, anyway, reminding us that winter is a distinct possibility later in the year... ;-) (I did a plate of the uniform of the last ski troops you have shown, long ago on the blog as one of my Xmas postings...)
Very true David. I have a publication from the Norwegian Army Museum which has more pictures like the last one showing ski troop drill taken from a period drill manual. It also lists the type of ski races that were run as training exercises and how much money the winner received. Keep cool Alan Tradgardland
Interesting. I found the image from which I drew my plate on a website no longer around but it said the images were taken from a document by one Grüner from 1765, so very early. Does your NAM publication confirm that?
Cheers,
David (thinking of climbing into the fridge at the moment to keep cool! ;-))
I'm guessing a second pole would be more of a hindrance for troops like that, outweighing whatever advantages it might bestow. But I'm not a skier. I hope everyone over there in the UK gets through your heat wave okay!
Nice pics Tradgardmastare - I particularly like the bugler print
ReplyDeleteMy favourite too, Norwegian ski trooper of the Napoleonic period.

Interestingly they use only one pole ?
