Kate Bush

I spent a most enjoyable two hours last night watching tv in the company of my youngest. The first hour was a compilation of Kate Bush performances at the BBC and the second hour was a documentary. Time passed in a flash. Well worth seeking out both programmes on BBC iPlayer.

I listened to Kate Bush in my youth and I certainly am going to revisit her music, especially the later material I am less familiar with, via Spotify.  Why not treat yourself to her wonderful music this weekend…

  1. Stranger Things 4 has put her back in the charts for a new generation. I find the 80s nostalgia of this show the more interesting as like Max Mayfield I had a Walkman, I had the Hounds Of Love album on tape with tiny lyrics printed on the insert. I played it to death as I loved the sound engineering with headphones on. The sound of helicopters travelling through your head from left to right. It was also my first introduction to traditional Irish music and drumming (likewise The Red Shoes, Bulgarian Folk music singing).
She seemed a bit of a recording studio hermit. It was a surprise on one of her rare TV interviews to realise she wasn’t Irish accent, her 70s 80s interview real speaking voice didn’t seem to match her song voice.
I never really took to the other earlier or later albums.

Experiment IV music video (spot Dawn French) could be a British Stranger Things, our version of the Hawkins Lab. https://youtu.be/NTUcoR8_pyE

    2. The morning distracted by blogging on the sonic banshee weapon that is Kate Bush and Experiment IV - Music video stills - and its as yet unacknowledged 80s influence on Stranger Things :)
Surely some pulp gaming scenarios here? https://manoftinblog.wordpress.com/2022/07/31/that-kate-bush-experiment-iv-video-a-british-stranger-things-c-1986/

    3. Most interesting Mark, much to think about. I have consulted my Stranger Things family expert who is coming round to a similar viewpoint.

  2. Im one of those saddos that possess a Kate Bush tee shirt and all her albums, not downloads I hasten to add. I usually have Kate playing in the background whilst painting, what a woman.

  5. I always thought her something of a screeching banshee but my formative music was Otis Redding with Stax-Volt and Motown

  6. At the time (1979-83ish) my preferred music was Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Jam, the Clash, Altered Images and so on - but I always had a soft spot for Kate - I had at least a couple of posters (3' x5' approx) of her wearing lycra exercise/dance gear up on my wall as a Uni student for four years!

  7. Ok - maybe it was a bit earlier - apparently Wuthering Heights was 1978! See here for an example of the poster I remember fondly :). ...
