Pioneers

I was inspired by this illustration-

I thought a river crossing might be fun in my Mark’s Little Soldier games. Can anyone suggest a source of model pontoons, pontoon bridges and inflatables for 28mm/30mm? The simple girder bridge looks potential filled. Any model railway savvy readers of this blog know where I might get one?

  1. The old Airfix girder bridge is still around (now made by Dapol) but might be a bit small. Sarissa do a couple as lasercut MDF but a bit more expensive. They probably do pontoon bridges as they have an extensive WWII range. Colonel Bills does rubber dinghies.

  6. IMHO the best/cheapest option is still the Airfix Pontoon Bridge. The secret is not to place the "sides" in the kit pre cut holes, but to fix them to the outside of the roadway bridge parts. That way, the unrealistic 1/72 outside walkway is abolished, and the bridge is wide enough for 28mm tanks (even Solido diecasts). All the best.

  8. I agree - old Airfix Pontoon bridge (eBay)
or the girder bridge in the Dapol range of Airfix railway building kits still in production in Wales and on sale £10 online https://www.dapol.co.uk/c003-girder-bridge-32cm-span-505

  10. I had a look last night and rediscovered my BUF Light Bridging Section - Dinky flatbeds, scratchbuilt bridge using Dapol parts, plastic boats from Ebay. I'll put a photo up on my HerefordVBCW blog after the weekend - might provide ideas for yours. The present issue is getting suitable looking (i.e. Germanic, in side caps) engineers just like your catalogue illustration - will have to build from 28mm plastics, I think!

  11. I'm hoping Mark will produce a variety of extra heads in the thrid release so that conversions become possible although given 28mm figures are often a bit larger than that, it may be possible to find matching size heads from other companies.

    1. Extra/ different head would be great. I have a sprue of Warlord(?) ww2 Italians which came free with a Wargames magazine recently. I might try them…
      Has anyone done so?
