Me, myself , I or early Christmas presents from me to me

Bought these rules( which have just arrived) here in the Duchy. They are an early Christmas present to me from myself. The idea was to buy at a time of year when there might be opportunities to read them quietly over coffee or something stronger.

Initial thoughts are very positive. I like the diceless nature of tribal and the playing cards used for everything, including measuring distances. In Death in the Dark Continent the army lists are captivating. I have long been interested in the Sokoto Caliphate and it is good to see a list for them. Interesting reading and planning ahead…

  1. Reading material that can turn in to gaming material is the best!

    1. Worth a checkout imho, even at early stages of reading.

  3. I like the Tribal rules a lot but you do really need an opponent - they don't work well solo because in combat you are trying to outguess your opponent's moves with the cards - a bit like playing rock, scissors, paper solo. However a good purchase with interesting mechanics.

    1. The second edition has solo rules , which I might try. It does appear to work best with others on my limited reading.

  5. Death in the Dark Continent is the best set of rules I've come across for colonial warfare. Tactics such as a bayonet charge against natives really work and the mechanics are quite easy to pick up and use. And you can substitute a single figure for a base for more of skirmish game.

    1. It does look full of potential…
I am fortunate that Naval Brigade figures are currently marching, or should it be sailing, from their previous owner in my direction. They will form one force. I am still contemplating their opposition…

  7. Always nice to have something to read on Christmas Eve, etc. Especially if you have to get familiar with a set of rules ready for games you might want to play over the holidays. So early prezzies sound like a very good idea.

    1. Agree on both fronts. Death in the Dark continent is an accessible read whilst Tribal is dense, rich and has less background.

  9. Merry Christmas Alan. When offered "coffee, tea, or something stronger," always opt for the something stronger! Have a peaceful Christmas and I look forward to seeing your continued regular posting in 2023. Phil
