Pathfinder (original title in Sami: Ofelaš and in Norwegian: Veiviseren) is a 1987 Norwegian film, directed by Nils Gaup. The movie is based on an old Sami legend.
It was the first full-length film in Sami, and it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1988. It was written and directed by Nils Gaup. Nils-Aslak Valkeapää played one of the parts as well as writing the music to the film, together with Kjetil Bjerkestrand and Marius Müller.

Well it isn't available from Amazon Canada under any of those titles. So you'll just have to enjoy it for me.

AH yes! This is a good film. My second year Norwegian class wathced it when I was a student. . . although the language spoken on screen was Sami, so we had to watch the Norwegian subtitles. Still, a fun movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It has a basis in the old Norwegian folktale called Over the Cliff.

Yes, a splendid film; well worth hunting down. I had to buy mine from Amazon.de (German Amazon) and the postage to the UK wasn't too bad. To North America postage is 14 Euros, about 20 dollars, which is rather steep, I think. Pity!
ReplyDeleteThere is (or was) a dubbed version but it is dreadful; much better to go for the version with subtitles.
