Yesterday began with me buying a book I had seen on Friday. I didn’t buy it there and then as I wanted to go home and read reviews of it, which I duly did. They were very positive indeed so l popped into my local bookstore and purchased-
Unexpected circumstances led to me having to wait for a long period of time in the M&S cafe which allowed me to dive right into the book. Well written, thought provoking and engrossing it is an excellent read. Recommended!Later in the day I accompanied my middle daughter to Aberdour for her swim-
I was reminded of this -
My first lot of 17th century figures are done so l tried one of the new boxes for size-
Nice box and the figures aren’t bad either.
Your box and figures both look great, some interesting miniatures, looking forward to seeing them when they hit the table. Your daughter is a brave lassie that's for sure!

ReplyDeleteThere is an Interesting paperback book by foreign correspondent Giles Tremlett called Ghosts of Spain about the long reach into the present and future of the Spanish Civil War and post war Franco’s Spain, including the collective ‘forgetting’ adjustment or agreement about (literally) not digging around in the past after Franco’s death and the strange fuzziness about the place of Monarchy. The Orwell book on Homage to Catalonia and Laurie Lee’s book A Moment of War are both worth reading. A confusing period of shifting factions.
One of the British Camp Fire Girls founders switched in the 1930s to Spanish medical aid and Refugee work.
Having read these I think this is not a period I could comfortably transform into a game setting, although Bob Cordery has written several books on the period.
I wonder how much parallel it has with the upheavals of The ECW seeing your other figures in their new box. A motley bunch, many of whom that could just about stand in as 1588 Armada Home Guard against those pesky Spaniards?
Several1940 Home Guard instructors fought with the International Brigades in Spain and published manuals passing on what they learnt new guerrilla techniques and urban mechanised warfare.
I'm feeling chilly just looking at that!
ReplyDeleteAnthony Beevor's book is a good starting point for the SCW. There's also this one about Scotland's involvement in the IBs:

I think modern Spanish history is very much an unknown (to us at least). It’s a long time since I read anything on the subject at university. And that only went up to the end of the civil war. I might have to look up that book.
ReplyDeleteFair play to your daughter getting in the North Sea this time of year!
