Brigadier

 I came across this recently-

https://tradgardland.blogspot.com/2021/04/revisiting-charge-rules-peter-young-and.html

It got me thinking again about Brigadier Peter Young. We know of his 18th century gaming via “ Charge” but what do we know of his 17th century ECW gaming? My link is to an old post about the Brigadier’s organisation for a ECW unit coming to us in diagrammatic form. Did he use Suren Willie figures for his armies. Were they ECW or perhaps his 18th Century imaginations back in the TYW ? Can anyone shine a light on this?

  1. I'd like to know more, too. Peter Young was a curious character. I haven't heard much about his partner in Charge! either, James Lawford, though Lawford wrote a few good histories just as Young did.

    1. I wonder if anyone can fill us in more re James Lawford. I can’t believe with the Brigadier’s interest in the ECW he didn’t game the period…

  2. I seem to remember Young referring to Lawford inviting him to a naval game. I'll see if I can find the source.

  3. Many years ago I went to a symposium on the ECW at the tower of London and he was one of the presenters. He talked about how battles were fought though he didn't refer to any of his re-enactment experience. One of the presenters failed to show so he filled in, offering pithy comments about any commander people cared to name. Too long ago for me to remember any particulars but he was very entertaining.
