One of the classics of railway modelling is by P D Hancock . He is the Grant or Young of the hobby. In his most famous book he created another county in Scotland, Craigshire and used it as a place to create layouts around . Here is one of his maps-
The second map shows how he added land to the map of eastern Scotland in a clever and creative way. This is the book the maps came from. It is a terrific read and I come back to it again and again. Recently l have been reading these books-
An idea began to form. What if Craigshire had volunteer units and they were engaged in trying to repulse an invader. After all the late 19th century saw Volunteers come to the fore and fears of invasion were rife. I found this in the plastic mountain and I was away gluing and painting-
This handy box of figures provides home service helmeted heads as well as the pith helmets . A look on the internet for volunteer uniform ideas and this is what l produced-
Smart looking chaps !

It is a wonderful book and this is a brilliant spin-off from it - love the figures and looking forward to seeing this idea develop !
ReplyDeleteIt is and a great inspiration to me.

Brilliant, really well done, will be following to see where this ends up.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Me too…

Excellent stuff, what a good idea! Does it rain ( or maybe just drizzle) a lot in Dundreich? 😄
ReplyDeleteDrizzles dreadfully in Dundreich.

It’s a great book … and it has clearly inspired you to develop a wonderful new project.
ReplyDeleteAll the best,

Many railway modellers makes up a fictious place or region to place their railway line (s) within. Usually they're placed close to real places, and some even makes up their own countries. I've guess it is the same as when wargamers creates Imagi-Nations for their scenarios. The railway modellers are more concerned with why that specific railway is located exactly there, and make up a region or fictional place around that. They usually don't think about other things like units for territorial defense. What a wonderful idea to combine these to hobbies into one fictional place. Nice units you've painted for Craigshire, Alan. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I do like an imagination…

Troops mounted on velocipedes are the shape of things to come. Like dragoons of times gone by, they will be able to speed to where they are needed much quicker than foot soldiers, and without the need to feed the horses! By the 20th century I tell you, there will be a new and startling approach to conflict: Lightning War!

I fear you may be correct sir. Only the other day I heard word of tricycle towed machine guns being purchased by the Volunteers. What next?

A fantastic looking project Alan, and a nice Model Railway / Wargame crossover.
ReplyDeleteA crossover is terrific fun.

You have been busy. I didn't know about the railway book but it is clearly a good spark to your imagination. Your invader choices are many from the literature of dire warnings from that era but personally I'd like to see some Russians with snow on their boots before you add their French allies to the scene. Will you build a railway line to fit with them? Cossacks chasing trains towards a tunnel- now there's a scenario.

Russians, French , who knows…
DeleteA Sarissa train maybe or a broken model railway one, we shall see…

An excellent idea for a wargame setting, combining both interests. One of the articles in Railway Modeller showed Hancock using the Airfix Guards Colour Party as, I think, the Craigshire Volunteers. I'll look it out.
ReplyDeleteMost interesting, I look forward to seeing that…

I’m not familiar with the great writers of the British model railway scene, but putting those together with miniature soldiers makes for a very interesting combination!
ReplyDeleteA classic book. What are the classics of the US model railway scene?

Clever idea Alan! I remember combining my Airfix figures with my dad's 00 railway as a 8 to 10 year old!
ReplyDeleteThat must have been terrific fun.
