I got out one of my favourite books I have had for around 40:years . It has been kept through numerous moves and book purges due to down sizing. There are loads of great illustrations in it but this is my favourite. It is of The Battle of the Five Armies and is by the renowned artist John Blanche .
The double page spread from the book.
The book carefully kept and poured over time and again.
Looking for ideas for banners for my current project. Some ideas here, in this close up.
Again more ideas. Food for thought indeed.

Interesting to see this book here. It' still on my shelves but I've not looked at it in a while, perhaps it's time to change that.

Certainly is! You will be enthralled by the artwork, colour and black and white , within. Btw , l can’t recall but do you wargame Middle Earth? If so what?

I reread LOTR very often, it used to be my way of feeling at home each time we moved. As for wargaming it, I always wanted to do the Fords of Isen but only the odd skirmish now and then. I have some of the Minifig figures and some of the early Citadel range. I do much more of more generic Fantasy with an eclectic mix of figures.
DeleteIf you want Literary Fantasy battles I don't think you can beat E.R.E Eddison. If memory serves "Mistress of Mistresses" gives you Cannae and "The Worm Ouroboros" gives you Lake Trasimene. The author's style is not to everyone's taste but he portrays a hero in fine style. His armies in the first book are Renaissance without gunpowder, and in the second [which is earlier] a cross between that and perhaps the Successors. There's a lovely Mix of the British [mainly English?] and the Mediterranean going on.

A fine tome indeed 👍
ReplyDeleteOne of my own Tolkein related books. An excellent book all round!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a terrific book with wonderful artwork which is very inspiring; have had mine for 44 years now, although I have not looked through it for a while. If I look over the top of the computer monitor I can see it on top of the far bookcase. :-) (And I have done the odd commission for flags for LOTR too!)
ReplyDeleteSent you an email Alan with some links for ideas and a couple of flags I made.
ReplyDeleteWillz.
P.S. I wasn't touting for a commission, by the way, but if you would like some of the LOTR flags I have done previously I would be happy to let you have them for nothing.
ReplyDeleteA cracking book !
ReplyDeleteWell, that's an inspiring masterpiece, no doubt. I have never had it printed in my hands, but I've lost myself on details on the screen many times, no wonder it has this kind of attraction on all of us!
ReplyDeleteGot that but must admit I haven't looked at it in years (decades?)
ReplyDeleteAlso bought that book sometime in the late 80s. Realised a few years ago it had gone missing at some point in one of my many house moves.
