Judging a book by it's cover

Whilst looking for fantasy rules online I saw this-

and was really taken by the image. I read more and decided to buy the softback copy. It arrived today and is an interesting read. I believe it is a Neo Clone ( don't ask ,beyond me too) of the original D & D rules.

  1. That is a cool cover; different from other rpg art. I'll admit it, cool art can draw me in, too. (and art that I don't like can turn me off of a game or a book)

  2. Definitely OSR - Old School Roleplaying Or Old School Renaissance.
New roleplaying games, but written in the spirit and atmosphere of the 70s and 80s. Some aim for a literal cloning of old rules, but rewritten w.r.t. clarity, layout, etc, others write new rules, but in the old style.

Kind of comparable to the Old School Wargaming way of doing things.

  3. That one, in particular, is intended to evoke the original D&D box set from 1974, without any of the later supplements. That version of D&D, btw, was recently released by WotC as part of their back catalog pdf program.
