Rebasing 2- a question

I am going to be painting this chap soon-
Any ideas how to base him so he is flying across the 60mm squared base. With my bat base I mounted them ( they came in groups flying) on pins secured in milliput so they flew about an inch above the surface. The Nazgul is another matter entirely due to his size and weight. Having opted for a more scenic look I am loathed to go down the upside down plastic wineglass route. Can you help?

  1. Drill into the underbelly of the beast and insert metal rod (cut up coathanger or similar) and drill similar hole in base. Build up round the base/wire connection with Milliput and then flock as normal....perhaps?

    1. That gets my vote - for the base I use the tree bases you get with K&M trees (looks like a tree stump with a flatened top and a hole) - stick that to a reasonable sized base and flock/terrain to match your other figures

  2. The thick wire is probably the best solution. There is a clear plastic rod option but I'm not sure if you can find one thin enough but strong enough.

The base will need to be heavy, perhaps a thick washer or 2.

If you make the height tree top high, a tree can be used to hide the wire and make it look like he has swooped down for a look.

I remember as a young college lad, trying to carve out the nazgul face do make him look invisible under the hood. Alas, one of the things that has been lost along the way.

  3. Look at how I did my Carrion for my Warmaster army.

A hefty base is a must, as wide as you can across the wingspan would help and also consider it alongside other tall figure bases.

  4. I have used a thin metal rod pinned into underside of model, but before pinning I twisted the other end round and round in an outward spiral before gluing it to base. Worked well and needed less covering afterwards to hide it.
I can't remember which figure it was though.

  5. I have done something very similar to what "Don't press the red button" described. I didn't worry too much about disguising the wire, just some light blue paint was good enough for me. But, depending on the height, you could add a bit of tall grass or something trailing below the creature. Making sure the base is heavy enough so the whole thing isn't top heavy is good, too.
