Mythical Earth: the bad guys on parade

For the first time I have put out all ( or nearly all as some are under repair like Shelob or awaiting painting) my Mythical Earth baddies on parade together. One thing that I notice particularly is the lack of uniformity in basing, something that will need to be remedied one day. Anyway I hope you enjoy this self indulgent wallowing in old school lead.

Who are you or the vintage job lot unveiled.

I got these rather cheaply with a view towards some restoration work over the coming months and because some of the figures were interesting looking-
Now for a closer look at the figures. Any comments, identifications or ideas most welcome.

Ancient Battle part two

Prince August Compatibility question ...

I have been interested in these Irregular Miniatures 42mm quarter flats for ages. I wondered about their compatibility to fight in games with the P.A semi flats. As I was ordering some highlanders ( a story for another day) I got a single French Infantry figure ( from the syw in America range) to have a look at. I really like the look of him but wonder if he would work alongside the Prince August ones. Here are some comparison photos. Remember I don’t want to mix them in the same unit just have them in the same game. Let me know what you think.

PVA’d

Yesterday saw the 1/32 Celts and Republican Romans getting a wash of pva glue. They will need to be finished off and tidied up, especially as the brush had flecks of white emulsion on it ...
However, they have been very, very patient and I think they deserve a game. Rules will be Tidders from the Wargamers Annual ,as they stand essentially, for the figures first outing...

Fifteenth Century Fridays

Fridays have become a regular Zoom gaming session using the Dba rules. They give an interesting tactical challenge as well as an enjoyable game. Recent weeks has seen the ongoing struggle between the Burgundians and the Swiss. We have fought this struggle over many years with many different sets of rules. Before Lockdown we had started reusing the George Gush Renaissance rules as a change from dbm. Last week my Swiss  won a very close run thing. This coming week we want to mix things up a little with mounted bowmen ( 15th Century dragoons if you know what I mean sort of) and dismounted men at arms. The following week I hope to have a medieval German Army ready and posted to my friend’s house for a change. Being Dba an army consists of 12 elements which equates to under fifty figures. Not too much to finish.
 M

Last week’s game in progress, rules at the ready. Technology coming in so handy.

The Germans in progress. They represent the army of the Holy Roman Emperor at the siege of Neuss. I am looking forward to to seeing how they will fare on the battlefield for their first game but they need to be finished, packed and posted first. Others plans include a Dithmarshen army, but one thing at a time.

And some work to take the occupants of the paint desk forward...

Painting

I managed to get some painting done today, both inside and outside. The Celts and their opponents have moved forward well-
Bright primary colours used to give a toy soldier look to the Celts.

French Generals- suggestions sought...

Here are a couple of 40mm French Generals , don’t know the make of figure btw, in the country-
I am looking for suggestions for names and/or titles for them. All I have come up with is General Carre- Fisher and General Temps- Perdu, not good I am more than happy to acknowledge. Do have a think and leave your suggestions here. Thanks in advance.

Repairs, renovations and rebasing

I spent much of today outdoors or in the shed, sorting out the 40mm figures in various ways. Click on the photos to enlarge them and see them better.

Currently looking at these rules as a basis for the games using the 40mm figures.

Tradgardland today

It was warmer here today and I was able to potter in the garden, read out doors and have a longer walk with one of my daughters in the afternoon. Progress was made with the syw figures and flags and more was done on the 54mm figures-
Work was started on the Republican Roman opposition to the Celts in the shape of some javelin throwing velites ( light infantry) and some more heavily armoured pila/sword infantry. I want to use the figures for skirmish games using Tidders rules from the wargamers annual crossed with Featherstone’s close wars. I want to try the ideas out soon.

On the work bench

Today , after some gardening, was partially spent rebasing figures and organising what will be some French Light troops of the syw. I attempted some hand drawn and coloured flags which were a disaster. The pens made the paper too vulnerable and the look was awful.
I will have a think and try later. I don’t imagine that commercially available flags are produced for these lesser well known units. So any flag making suggestions welcome. On a more positive front this arrived from the splendid folks at Caliver Books-
This is a visually impressive book, well produced with lots of information, scenarios and inspiration for the hobby. I have only begun reading it but I am most impressed so far. So tomorrow will bring some more sorting , rebasing and perhaps another go at the flags. Some sun would be appreciated also.

A visitor to Tradgardland

Pop over here to see one of my fellow bloggers photos of his trip to The Duchy of Tradgardland
https://horseandmusketgaming.blogspot.com/2020/06/a-stroll-through-tragdardland.html
His knowledge of the Duchy’s history is most impressive and a fascinating diversion in these strange days.

At the river once more...

In the shed again...

Today I began to sort out my 40mm 18th Century figures who haven’t seen the light of day for ages, some if at all. I am keen to do some Seven Years War western front games with small forces. Here are some pictures of the collection being dusted with a view to repairs -

I have been inspired partly by the conversations and figures on Saturday’s Zoom and also by a desire to get my old school figures into play. A Charles Grant book has been ordered and some of my reference books ( old and new) looked out not to mention the SYW project on the internet.
