This arrived from Berlin today-
Some transport to go with the semi flats, a few more civilians and a mountain castle as scenery to go with my interwar imaginations. The sleigh is to potentially use for 18th century sleigh races inspired by pictures l have by Georg Daniel Heumann.
Always liked the idea of flats, just never liked the idea of trying to paint them...
ReplyDeleteThese are almost semi flats from a manufacturer called Spenkuch. Toys rather than pure collectors flats. They have, at least some of them like the civilians, a three dimensionality which is easier to paint than pure flats.

Scenic and picturesque fun to be had! Sleigh races with the mountain castle in the background would be a lovely Christmastide jaunt in the Duchy, I think.
ReplyDeleteThe sleigh has great potential for such races. I thought l would get it now, see how it paints up and see if some conversion work was possible. The general idea is to continue that imaginary toy collection vibe.

Oh very nice ! , warning 'flats' are very seductive !
ReplyDeleteThanks, they are indeed. I got some ancients during lockdown way back and was smitten. I have some to paint but cannot work out a sensible way to remove the flash. I don’t like wee metal fragments at all being worried they get into my eye or my feet as I walk about in bare feet.

"Flats" have always intrigued me, and they are very tempting but I just know my dabbing would never do them justice. Looking forward to seeing your progress on them.
ReplyDeleteMy daubing doesn’t either. I come from the Tony Bath rather than serious collector/ artist school of flats.

Live the castle!
ReplyDeleteIt is terrific fun isn’t it! No realistic terrain in this project!

Fantastic, Alan.
ReplyDeleteI've often thought of splashing out on some (painted) flats for a Christmas scene.

Get a few , try them out now and have them around at Christmas. Even one or two, even pre painted, would be charming and well worth it.

Oooo I like those. Unfortunately I would not have the painting skill to do them justice but they are lovely
ReplyDeleteI will daub away. I am not looking for high art collector look but toys. Professionally painted flats are true art but not the point. Get one or two and have a wee go , just for fun.

Like looking at pictures of flats in books. But afraid to tackle one with a paint brush. Just too detailed.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. Your figures look great and I am sure you would achieve with flats. Maybe start with a very simple one.

Huzzah! Flat car racing games! Some fine figures ....
ReplyDeleteFine figures indeed, racing to come at some point…

Those are magnificent flats! Nice variety too
ReplyDeleteShould be fun if I don’t butcher the painting.

These really are rather nice! Over 40 years ago (1978-9), I did a return school exchange trip to Bavaria and one of the German boys I got to know was into painting flats - mainly Fredrician era I think. At the time, I was in one of my "between" toy soldier phases (age related I would think, I was 17/18) so I was mildly interested but preferred getting out to the Oktoberfest and knocking back Apfelkorn with a trainee priest and the guy I was staying with, who has subsequently become a reasonably famous German TV and film, named Juergen Tonkel!
ReplyDeleteAn enjoyable anecdote. Time to reacquaint yourself with flats or semi flats?
