I have made no bones about it , when it comes to Wargames Rules the simpler the better imho. I got these rules around 1986 and I have enjoyed reading them ( not to mention being inspired by them and the sample game) over the years. I have often thought they would be the rules for a Napoleonic project.
Hopefully l will get a chance to use them in the months to come
Completely agree with your philosophy, Alan...simpler the better for me, too! Hope to see you try these out and give us your opinion on them.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to giving them a go , no doubt tweaked along the way…

I still have my copy. The rules had some wonderful photographs of a game in progress and also a campaign system.
ReplyDeleteThe photos are great aren’t they. Most inspiring.

I too have a copy but never used them.
ReplyDeleteDust them off ?

'Playable' is either a bold claim or a minimum requirement... Perhaps the title reflects the situation rule-writers (and 'rule-lawyers') had got us into by that time. I look forward to hearing how they work out - and yes, couldn't agree more, simplicity is crucial!
ReplyDeleteI think your title explanation is very true.

Great wee vintage set of rules. I still have a copy on me shelves somewhere.
ReplyDeleteA couple of new-ish simple, but not simplistic, alternatives are the Perry / Johnson rules which are free on the Perry website, along with lists and scenarios.
Another set of nice and simple rules are those by Andy Callan, available on the wofun website. He has made all his rules free, covering most periods. I got a nice link through the Beasts of War site.
regards,
Tom
Interesting ideas, I will give them a try…

Agree with you completely as regards simplicity, it's what make it easier and more enjoyable and these days if we wish to recruit...or dragoon....New recruits, more likely to succeed.
ReplyDeleteHave those rules played them, they work.
I considered ordering these at one point, then discovered the author had been arrested for something disgusting... Do let us know how they are.
ReplyDeleteThey may have been arrested, but were they prosecuted and convicted? I don't understand.
DeleteWill let you know how it goes…

The Charles Grant Napoleonic Rules have been enjoyable as well, although I know not everyone's cup of tea. I like the way Charles Grant explained the reasoning behind his rules, he actually gave the reader everything by way of data etc. to allow that person to make their own set of rules if they do desired.
ReplyDeleteI have purchased sets of rules, which to this day I have never been able to fathom!
I remember when they were in Military Modelling, chapter by chapter.
