Another game today and the first outing for the Norwegians. Here is what I sent the players-
“It is a clash between the Anglican League Swedes and a Norwegian force which has landed off course whilst trying to “liberate” the Northern isles. Forces as follows-
Swedes- HQ, three regular sections each with lmg and rifles, one irregular unit of volunteers with no lmg plus a wee mortar.Norwegians- HQ, two regular sections each with lmg and rifles, one regular section with lmg , rifles and three figures with grenades, a heavy machine gun and a large mortar.
It will be interesting to see how these take on each other.
Scenario- hold the village pub garden to defend the local ale.”
What they were not told was the village pub was defended by some retainers of the Duke of Brunswick who was in Britain to offer aid, troops and support King Edward Edward. They were a third force , albeit small , commanded on the table top by the Duke himself and played by the umpire, me.
Here is a photo of the layout and of the Norwegians-all regular army and part of an expeditionary force.
Nice looking troops, looking forward to seeing the battle of the Scandanavians!
ReplyDeleteThanks, coming soon hopefully.

It's nice to know that the Norwegians don't just send a christmas tree...
ReplyDeleteDid you know they send one to Edinburgh every year too?

In the not so quite imaginary world, the very last battle between Swedish and Norwegian troops actually took place just 25km from where I live; At Kjølberg bridge at the 14th of august 1814.
ReplyDeleteIn your scenario I cheer for the Brunswickers defending their pub!
I will look that Battle up Roger, thanks for the mention of it.
DeleteI fear the Brunswick troops may have had a very hard time…

Just like the old days, different Scandinavian warbands competing for the prize of the southern lands.

A most interesting reflection. I fear my liturgically minded Lutheran Swedes might be a tad earnest for more that supporting their Anglican coreligionists but the Norwegians l see being more territorial gain oriented as they are an official Army expedition.

Hello Alan: I agree with Chris above, makes perfect sense of how different countries would want to intervene in a Britain in chaos. Makes me wonder though how VBCW plot lines see what the Royal Navy would do? Would it fall apart so badly that any old country could land troops in England? Or would they be on the side of the Norwegians for some reason? Questions, questions. Cheers, Michael
ReplyDeleteQuestions, questions and lots of enjoyable gaming to be had in the vbcw imho.

The original VBCW seemed to be set in a world in which the Army, RAF and RN are ignored so that units made up of cricket players, parsons or whatever would be the prime focus, a sort of 20th century version of the (misnamed) English Civil War. For me it feels more like fantasy (which need not have any internal consistency) than an SF/alternative history.
