FE Perry article (1)
The below appeared in Plastic Warrior 10 . The first is a covering note from Ross Perry whilst the others are originally from the Midland Bank in house magazine.
For a few moments I was confused as I always referred to this inspirational gamer as 'Frank' but then I read on and saw that he was known as 'Fred' to his friends. Frank (or Fred) Perry is one of the biggest influences in my own gaming. What I like is he uses 54mm figures, creates back stories which he translates into novels, and that his scenarios are often 'inter-period' as he uses figures from different eras in the same campaign, rationalized by rationalized by an SF background. He also blends a kind of Dungeons and Dragons element with more traditional wargaming. I ran a couple of posts in my Quantrill's Toy Soldiers some time back but your photocopies are better than mine. Would you mind if I used them in my blog and cross referenced your blog there?
Thanks for reprinting these - I couldn’t find a source of the Midland banking magazine so this is interesting to see. I wonder if John Curry will reprint his books and associated writings. I couldn’t find an affordable copy of his sci fi books either.
The reference to Midland Bank is an error on my part, I had it fixed in my head that Frank worked for them but I am reminded by the article that it was National Westminster Bank, that's the tricks of memory and old age for you, sorry about that. The article was reprinted in Plastic Warrior in 1987, sadly Frank had passed away a few years before that, I don't know when the original had been published. Frank's son Ross and his wargame partner Ken Gillings had written a couple of articles on their games before then, Ken continued to be active in the hobby until he passed away. The early issues of Plastic Warrior were essentially photocopied newsletters which are now becoming severely faded.
I tried to track down the sci fi books too but to no avail. Hope I just come across them in second hand bookshop one day at a very cheap price… Alan Tradgardland
