What an interesting blog entry! Some of the things that the writer points out are blindingly obvious ... when they are pointed out!
It says much for Tolkein's story-telling that the mixture of historical periods works seamlessly. Bearing in mind that Tolkein served during the Great War, he must have experienced what must have appeared surreal at times. Moving from the cultured, well-ordered Edwardian world to the almost primeval fighting in the trenches would have seemed like travelling back in time.
