Line and column, what do you think?

I don’t really fancy rebasing Jim’s splendid Napoleonic Swedes. He has made a splendid job of them and l don’t want to mess them up. I am currently gearing up for the arrival of the Napoleonic Portable Wargame rules. Do you think l would get away with the below to show if a unit is in line or column?

Those on the left hex are in line whilst those on the right hex are in column. Will it do, what do you think?

  1. Tradgardmastare,

It works for me ... and as long as you are happy with it, who is going to care.

    All the best,

    Bob

PS. I've just tried to contact Jim by email, but it has bounced. Please could you contact him on my behalf to ask him to send me an email with his email address on it so I can make sure I am using the right email address.

  2. If Bob approves who am I to disagree when you'll be using his rules. However, to be honest I think it would look better - which doesn't mean work better - with bigger hexes or 3 figure bases.

    1. Bigger hexes maybe but I do prefer four figures in a row.

  3. If you don't want to rebase (which I can understand) this would work.

Another option might be to put a single stand up front with a second stand behind them with a space in between to represent a line with supports, while the columns are as you have shown.

  4. I think it's fine, but - if you're not fussed about such things - you could put the two bases end to end and simply ignore the slight incursion into a neighbouring hex,

  5. As above - it's whatever you are happy with but if it was me and I didn't want to faff around with rebasing, I would see if I could just cut the bases in half with minimum hassle :o)

  6. Hi Alan

If you want help with rebasing the Swedes I am sure I could help you out.

If need be they should be completely rebased.

It might even be possible to get additional figures to bolster the numbers.

    1. Thanks Jim for your kind offer but I will not rebase the Swedes. Some Swedish cavalry as a commission from you would be great. Let me know what you think...

  7. Looks fine to me, Alan. I can clearly see the difference and as long as you are happy with the convention, that's all that matters. Life is too short to rebase.
Now you have me curious about the portable Napoleonic wargame!

    1. The book is just out, have a look on Bobs blog for more info. Do you have the portable Wargame and it’s follow up books? They are well worth getting.

  8. I think that Ross has the solution - cutting the bases might be tricky depending on the material used.

    1. There are two generations od bases on these figures.

Most of the infantry were done decades ago. The base is 5mm poster type cardboard topped with household filler and rough sand.

The newer ones will 3mm bookbinder cardboard topped with household filler and railway modellers ballast.

The older ones will be tougher but not impossible to cut with a razorsaw.

  9. I hope to set it out later today and have a look. I am hoping the idea of Ross will look great on the hexes.

    1. Tradgardmastare,

If the units are facing the side rather than the point of the hex, they should be able to line up with only a slight overhang at either end.

      All the best,

      Bob
