A late 17th century gridded Wargame - how it looks 1

l would like to try and fight some gridded games for the later part of the 17th century using my 54mm  figures and Steven Page’s ECW gridded rules. My first thought is the look of the game . Here are two units ,one with pike one without-
I would be interested in your options about how it looks.

  1. Alan, your figures look great however you organise them! Do you intend your units to occupy three squares per unit (which would mean using larger squares) or is each unit divided into three subunits with one subunit per square as in your photo?

My own feeling is that pike and musket units should fight as one coherent unit rather than be allowed to split up and operate as three independent subunits but others may differ.

As far the look if the thing is concerned historically both the musket and pike elements of an infantry regiment tended to have the same depth personally I would either have one rank of pike and musket with some command figures behind the pike for show or have two ranks of musket to match your two ranks of pike. My own CTA ECW regiments of 8 figures had two pike per base slightly offset to give the illusion of two ranks and ditto with the pike as per Dirk Donvill's 'About Cromwell' rules. Of course it's a bit different using your lovely ATS figures as I'm not sure you would want to mount them on multiple bases..?

    Best wishes

    1. I am attracted by the idea of three squares per unit ( one per subunit) and do indeed need bigger squares/hexes.My thoughts are still out on wheter to allow them to fight as sub units ie leaving wings of muskets stationary and advancing pike or vice versa.Your suggestions have been very helpful and i will go away and have a look at various on table permutations. Thanks for your ideas.

  2. They do look splendid whatever they are fighting over... pikemen too? Irregular do some nice pikemen for Army Bleu in classical armour.

  3. I like the 2 ranks of pikemen but a 4 figure group might do very well, perhaps 2 or 3 pike plus 1 or 2 command figures. For later 17thC the ratio of muskets should be a bit higher than ECW and the ranks were still fairly deep so muskets 2x2 would work well and this grid size would be adequate to hold them all.

I have been having some success using multi-grid units just requiring them to occupy contiguous squares.
