I have always thought the most realistic fitness test for a Soldier was to stuff all their kit into the four duffle bags given for deployment, then race them across 300m of tarmac to unstuff for "Customs Inspection", then re-stuff them and return to the Point of Origin.
Extra points awarded if all the kit made it into the same bags as stuffed at the start.
The notion of "light infantry", of which I am supposedly a part, sends me into convulsions of jocularity.
In my next life I am going to join the Coast Guard as a cook on a buoy tender.
I still have one of my dad's kit bags, a veteran of Italy and Holland. It not only has his name and number but my mine from my army Cadet summer camp days in the early 70's.

Excellent observations Eric. P.S the Native Americans have painted up splendidly.
