Hope you enjoyed that.
I had occasion to send an email to my two regular opponents cancelling last week's game due to the weather. I also took the chance to explain my Bolt Action plans. To cut a long story short l was saying I had enough “stuff “ for tactically interesting games and probably would be stopping adding to my ww2 etc collection. I can’t find the email or I would have copied it here. Basically l have enough VBCW stuff for big games at my friends or wee games here. As for wee games l have the following ww2 options -
LDV (armband , shotgun and ill equipped) versus Germans
Homeguard ( uniformed and better equipped) versus Germans
1940 Norwegians versus Germans
Ww2 Swedes versus Germans - what if invasion of Sweden.
My Germans are all paratroopers and mountain troops btw.
So that is it . Yes l wouldn’t mind the odd tank or beaverette armoured car that might mix it up a bit but the ratio of added gaming experience versus price stops me currently. Or perhaps a VBCW cricket team but I don’t need them, fun yes but not necessary. Sometimes enough can be enough.
Always hard to say enough is enough, for me anyway. I think I have enough and then something tempts me and another addition arrives! Must admit the idea of a VBCW cricket team sounds great!
ReplyDeleteIt is hard for me too but as time moves on I am thinking a bit about quality not quantity in my gaming collection, in terms of gaming experience not painting btw. I too am tempted by the constant new releases and shiny new toys, it is hard not to be . I guess I am just thinking out loud.

DeleteOne of the toughest decisions in wargaming, deciding when to stop.
ReplyDeleteSo , so hard. For me it is beginning to by driven by storage space , table size and time. Maximise fun , depth of gaming experience over other concerns .

I've not played a WWII game in a long time. Does this decision mean you are looking for something new or will you be adding to another existing collection?
ReplyDeleteStephen
Stephen , I guess part of what I am saying is that the Homeguard and Germans I have painted over the last month, added to the VBCW, 1930s Swedish and 1940 l had already are sufficient to give interesting games . I am intending not to add to these but might add the odd tank, armoured car or interesting unit if I feel that they would add to the richness of the gaming experience. I guess that I am reacting to the idea of you can never have enough. A friend I know has collected the same army for over forty years adding to it but it is far , far too big to field. I guess l am just musing out loud…

Ref. Norway 1940: have you seen Number 24 on Netflix?
ReplyDeleteI have, a good watch. The film about Danish bicycle troops in ww2,is excellent also.

I mentioned yesterday that I don't have a lead mountain, barely a lead mole hill. I've accumulated so many figures over so many periods in 50+ years of wargaming that I really don't need any more. And these days I'm content to use my Bonaparte in Egypt figures for the Caribbean along with with some Darkest Africa figures for indigenous forces. And the Foreign Legion find themselves fighting Rifs who look strangely like Baluchis from, again, Darkest Africa. It's no longer important that the figures are correct, the importance is that I enjoy the game.
ReplyDeleteI think in our hobby we need a force that allows us to have a good game but there's also the" chrome" that need to add extra excitement to a given scenario. We don't always need another unit of infantry but a vehicle or something to substitute in to keep us challenged.
ReplyDeleteI certainly understand the issue of storage space, but I haven't been forced to stop....yet! I have some collections that have had one battle then remained in their boxes for a decade or more.....
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have enough miniatures for some interesting WW2 skirmishes! OHSW??
ReplyDeleteBTW, No. 24 is one of the best Norwegian WW2 movies I've seen so far. I've also had the pleasure of meeting Gunnar Sønsteby "Kjartan" in person.
