Photos from Mark.

I am indebted to Mark for the following info from Mr Opie’s book-

My figures look similar. My horses are not completely hollow but have a square shaped area missing underneath, probably to reduce the weight of the castings. I continue to be intrigued...

  1. Alan,

I wonder if these are adaptions of the standard Dorset artillery figures - are the riders hollow? The Dorset horses are "Hollow Bellied" with a cut out to reduce the weight of the castings. This is a picture Giles sent me of the SPanish Dragoons after an enquiry from a customer. They used the 1820s Dragoon Head for them.

  2. The James Opie book that the Spanish Dragoons picture and text is from is Britain's Toy Soldiers 1893 - 1932.

If these are Dorset castings, that's great as you can order spare arms, order missing bits etc as needed.

    1. So true Mark, they are great figures and if they are indeed Dorset I will be buying some to match. I rather fancy these pulling an artillery piece in imaginations type uniform...

    2. You can make up the same/similar figures from Dorset with a head swap for the 1820s lifeguard helmet...

I don't think they are Dorset horses as the cutouts look different, and the Dorset ones are designed to have the tracing wire going into the horse in an H shape, while these appear to have a ring on the front of the horse and the wire goes through this to the bar between the horses...

  3. Lovely stuff, I would paint them as they should be, that they can be drafted into imagination games is just a bonus. This is a great addition to your collection!!!!!
