He’s got the look or at least he’s trying to get one

 Set up some battlefields today-

Felt cloth with trees, no demarcation of woods by areas of green felt . Trees with wooden bases , still unpainted.
Hex mat but used in non hex mode, trees on demarcated woods and hills.
Infantry go ahead through the woods whilst tankettes advance on the flank…
Heavy machine gun dug in behind hedge, infantry skirt the woods whilst making for the rolling hills.
Not happy with the look yet but trying options…

  1. Can you put your finger on what you're not liking.

I don't like the figures because I find the helmets make everything look French or German whatever colour they wear and I'd prefer something more generic and less distinctive.
But I think you like the figures but haven't decided on the look of the table. Do you want a Nursery look, a Kriegspiel look, or an early wargame look? You will have seen some who have gone for 2D scenery. What about a simple board with the scenery chalked onto the surface? What about a simple map? Is it just that the scenery is too small for the figures? Do half a dozen figures represent a squad or a whole brigade - this might tell you whether you want tiny scenery or a matching size. [Whether you will deploy Generals etc on the table may give a clue to your 'scale'. Someone may just use the Staff figures on a Diplomacy Board].
I hope there is an idea here that helps

  2. Yes, I have seen "someone" (I frequent far too many blogs!) who has created 2D scenery and painted it high gloss to match the figures....maybe that's what is missing Alan? Personally, I don't hanker after this type of figure or gaming (I would prefer Mr Copplestone put his undoubted talents into expanding his lovely 28mm ranges!) but I realise a lot of gamers do like this range and the figures are popping up all over the place on blogs at the moment....high gloss, 2D scenery, terrain, buildings etc...I reckon that's the way to go!

  3. I think the figures are charming but would prefer them in 54mm to match my other figures. I am not a fan of over stylized terrain except for wooden block buildings that hark back to Wells. Nor am I a fan of 2D trees because there are so many good 3d ones out there. But then I don't mind painted pinecones. It all comes down to personal preference.

  4. Hello Alan the figures are looking good. Are they 1:1 ratio for skirmish games?
Have you tried appropriately sized book wooden hex hills, maybe with the felt topping cut to match or painted to match your mat? It might give that Wells look more than the felt woods which is for me the oddly jarring element. The trees on their simple mounts seem fine.

  5. Figures look good and a good use of all the figures released in the 1st wave. I think the felt has too much texture and a plain wood or MDF board would be better or perhaps cork.
