I have long admired the semi flat toy soldier play sets from manufacturers such as Spenkuch. I really enjoy the detail and animation of such sets and particularly the creative way in which buildings and trees are created in 2d-
The photos show examples. Such play sets are available but expensive be they originals or modern reproductions. I have tried making my own in card but it falls to bits. Hence my delight in finding these Mdf palms featured in the previous post. They are 3mm thick Mdf and sturdy. When looking for these I discovered the manufacturer produces other trees , house etc in similar material as flat laser cut blanks no doubt for fun craft purposes . So I have sent off for a few samples to paint up and use with my semi flats. Semi flat stylish scenery, the way to go...
I think the semi flat buildings have a useful symbolic role to play in Portable Wargame square grid games.

DeleteI do like the fridge magnet for smaller scales excellent. The stylised, symbolic terrain style very much appeals to me. Back to stage sets again !

ReplyDeleteI too share your admiration for semi-flat figures. I have collected those made by Spenkuch, Wollner, and Authenticast, mainly in 40mm size. You are right about the buildings and trees, they are wonderful. Especially those made by Spenkuch. Their battle terrain is excellent, their burning war-torn buildings really bring a special element to the wargame battlefield! And their battleships are brilliant in all phases of battle: sailing, firing guns, exploding, and sinking! I look forward to seeing Mdf creations!
ReplyDeleteSpenkuch is my particular inspiration. I really like the ships too but have yet to find any available at a price Incan justify. Do you game with your figures Brad? If so what rules do you employ?
DeleteI play with my figures and I kind of make it up as I go along. I want to have fun with them and not be mired down with a bunch of complicated rules. I recently bought some Bob Cordery books and I will see if I can find a set of rules that are simple and keep things fun.
ReplyDeleteSounds a great plan re gaming. Bob’s books are excellent and Ross Macfarlanes battle game of the month blog has some interesting rules on it. I think figures like to be played with not just sitting on a shelf. I painted 54mm figures in my teens but thought can I do with these apart from looking ? I then stopped collecting my Rose , Lassett , Historex etc and got gaming figures.
