There seems to be a lot to think about currently, too much. Children starting new chapters in their lives for example I am not sure why I feel a tad overwhelmed by everything. I have been enjoying the Hundred, the Olympics and other wireless / tv dramas, reading a bit and pottering around in the garden and painting desk. Hit the crisps, biscuits and cheese too much this week and am not sleeping too well. Part of it may relate to Jan’s sixth anniversary a fortnight today and these strange times but l’m not sure. Anyway a good thing was l played my second face to face game. We commanded the Swiss against the Burgundians of Charles the Bold but lost .Both armies belong to my regular opponent btw .It was a good, close run thing. I do so like the aesthetics of the late 15th Century and these armies in particular. They have always caught my imagination. Here are a couple of pictures of the game-
I think, at the moment, things like this can creep up on us and it all gets a bit overwhelming. Glad you managed to get a diverting game in...looks great.
ReplyDeleteIt was an excellent game and great fun.
DeleteThe hundred
ReplyDeleteIs that dystopian sci-fi or cricket?
Stephen
Are they not the same? :)
DeleteI used to watch the dystopian one with my daughters a few years ago , enjoyed it but later series got a tad silly.
The cricket has been terrific!
I can see how things build up. Be good to yourself.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree on that period. Like the slightly later period of the Italian Wars as expliques on Iain’s blog. Difficult to paint large numbers.
Thanks! It was a fascinating age. I covered it in my Uni of Edinburgh opening learning art history which added to my appreciation of it.
DeleteThese things can crop up which is part of life, as long as they pass on. It is good to get out amongst the company of friends again.
ReplyDeleteVery true Ross.
DeleteHi Alan,
ReplyDeleteHope you have a good night sleeping through till the early hours - I usually have something to eat when I turn in a midnight - some 'Digestive Biscuits' - it helps...or perhaps a 'Hot Coco' may help. Stay well there in Scotland. Chin up Mate. Regards. KEV.
Thanks Kev and good advice.
DeleteWhat rules did you use? I'm hoping to experiment with Test of Resolve soon.
ReplyDeleteThe figures look amazing.
WRG DBM . We have used them, as well as the small battle version dba, for longer than l care to think about. Although baroquely written they give a very exciting and fun game.
DeleteI see on your reading list is Duffy's book on the '45. How does this compare/work with the earlier "The '45" published 2003. Is it worth having both?
ReplyDeleteStephen
I prefer the the newer one but have both. In some ways they are complimentary. I would recommend Fight for .. as well worth reading.
DeleteI can understand your feelings, I think - it's a very odd time, the light at the end of the tunnel seems to continually recede.. plus upcoming sad anniversary, of course. But the game pics looked great, it must have been terrific to get back to 'face-to-face'!
ReplyDeleteThat period does look lovely, but someone else would have to do the painting for me.
Simon Winder's recent 'Lotharingia' talks about the various Dukes of Burgundy and the ramificaitons of their doings, among much else!
Burgundians and their fragmented Duchy are fascinating. You are correct , it is a funny time indeed. Great period to game. Figures are so much easier to paint than 18th Century. Being pre landsknecht the clothing is much simpler to do sans slashing and multi coloured frippery.
