The Romans built a fort at Cramond . Very little is left. A fascinating piece of Roman monumental sculpture was found in the river in recent times. After my walk to Silverknowes I got a bus to the National Museum of Scotland to see the sculpture which resides there now.
On my return this was through the letter box waiting for me-
It looks a fascinating read as well as containing useful illustrations.
Looks like a nice walk! By chance I was looking at a very similar information board about a similar (perhaps smaller ) Roman fort only yesterday - Caister-on-Sea. Does it inspire 'Romans Vs barbarian raiders' gaming ideas?
ReplyDeleteSmall world! It does inspire , Romans alway do! If there were Romans/Celts with the look and size of Britains I would jump in in 54mm
DeleteI had a Peter Laing Roman legion at 1 to 20 scale years ago, sadly gone but have a 28mm Early Imperial one still. Not to mention bits and bobs of armies in other Roman periods…
Interesting bit of sculpture and a beautiful looking area .
ReplyDeleteQuite agree on both fronts.
DeleteI spent well over twenty years living in Cramond. Lovely area till the flight path got too busy.
ReplyDeleteDid you get some of the fabulous chips from the Corbie in Silverknowes?
Ronnie
Still lovely and not too intrusive imho. I recall the Corbie from years ago. I had hoped Cramond might furnish me with a wee coffee shop but nothing seemed open sadly.
DeleteFascinating - thanks. Lucky to live near so much interesting history...
ReplyDeleteCheers,
David.
Glad you found it interesting, Edinburgh has so much to offer. You can take the boy out of Edinburgh but never Edinburgh out the boy, in my case!
