Feeling very tired this morning and not having a painting vibe, l decided to see how the MLS figures would look on terrain l currently had . I got out the terrain ( 6 by 4 hex mat, hex hills and trees) I had bought from DC some time back and set up a few trial shots-
I like the height and could paint up some of the unpainted thick hexes in brown/ grey as very rough terrain , more mountains than hills. The trees work well with the figures but I can’t make up my mind wheter or not to paint the wooden tree bases. I like the wood but wonder if it would be better green.
The figures climb the hills through the woods. They look fine to me. Not retro I agree but certainly something that could be used.
Trying to see what is the optimum number of figures for a hex. I think five, possibly six , will be the way forward…
Single vehicle, MG or artillery hex occupancy will be what I go for. I like the idea of officers moving as individuals to affect ( for better or worse) the infantry etc whose hex they are in.
Tree bases, go for green.

An idea, wondering about brown or grey…

Hello there old chap,
ReplyDeleteI always intended painting the bases green but never got around to it. I reckon that would be the way to go but don't try taking the trees off the bases…. I did once and it didn’t end well! I really lie those figures and reckon that of they had pushed to make them in plastic (hard, not polythene) they would have cleaned up! Imagine the potential!
All the best,
DC
PS They do look good on the cloth!
Still swithering about base colours. Hard plastic would have been fun but not retro:)
DeleteI think they look good on the cloth too.

I’d go for brown/grey bases. You don’t get much sunlight reaching the ground with conifers - in a house I moved into years ago there was a hedge of conifers that had ruined the lawn 🙄.

Good idea with good rationale.

Looks good to me - I like the look of 5 figures in a hex and think you're right with 1 vehicle or gun. This project is very nice. B/W pics will be spot on!
ReplyDeleteB&w photos definitely on the agenda. Five figures leave room for an officer to join them for rallying and command purposes.

Tradgardmastare,
ReplyDeleteSeeing your figures is weakening my resolve! They are ideal for Interbellum imagi-nations.
All the best,
Bob
I am delighted to have weakened your resolve Bob!

Interesting to see the MLS 30mm figures in action / on the table.
ReplyDeleteIndividual officers means more skirmish and heroic opportunity?
Tree base depends on if you wish to use it flexibly, such as dual using these conifers as Christmas trees in snow mat games. A darker brown or textured base as would be found under the shadow branches of trees in snow or sun - not much grows under a conifer and many a deciduous tree. But then again, this is Toy Soldiers of a shiny persuasion ...
Would white top, grey or brown or grey so de and green reverse / base work on these solid hexes?
The heroscape hexes I use are coloured top (grass green, desert, grey rock) on a basic brown plastic hex. When building hills and cliffs you get this brown coloured cliff etc.
I am thinking of spraying some heroscape hexes white, for snow games which means losing this distinctive two colour effect of the hexes seen here:

Or

Forget that - two sided / two toned hexes is already seeming like too much work!
DeleteLots of interesting ideas to think about…

The figures look great with your terrain
ReplyDeleteThey look so great on the field! Regarding the trees, I think wooden bases are lovely and go great with the neo-retro feel; painting them a prime green might bring out more of a toy soldier feel with the lads. Do whatever pleases you most and enjoy the fun of it!
ReplyDeleteI can’t make up my mind re bases, need to have a think…
DeleteI am certainly enjoying the fun.

A vote for green, plus a second for enamel paint. The real question is - matte or gloss?
ReplyDeleteThanks, gloss everytime of course!

Hope you get the painting vibe soon Alan. It’s got to be fun not a chore. My opinion only the bases in a light green or what they call toy soldier green would make them more outstanding and bright but whatever you like that’s the main thing. Nice terrain by the way. Best regards Quinn
ReplyDeleteIdea growing on me even more…
