A parade

Inspired by my grand day out yesterday, l set up a wee parade having dug out the box containing my 1745  Hessians and accompanying British dragoons. I still need to assign colours to my small units. Wonderful flags by David M by the way. This represents the German troops in the Forty Five.

It is a small set up with four bases to a unit with some loose hussars ( no doubt talking in Latin) and dismounted dragoons for skirmishers.
The project was to build a force for games based on the excellent book by Christopher Duffy.
Another view of these Germans awaiting deployment in the North…

Although fascinated by the whole panoply of Jacobite risings l have a particular interest in the Hessian involvement. I got Duffy’s book twelve years ago and it was a revelation. I guess I am fascinated by this micro campaign for a number of reasons- a rollicking story, sympathetic characters especially the Duke, interesting atypical attitudes displayed, the fact Hessians marched through and deployed in places l know or have stayed/lived in, the romance of the hussars , the German element being of German stock myself and it is fascinatingly niche in a good way. Hope to present the colours over the weekend..

P.s I sent for off for some government highlanders from Jim P’s recent sale and await their arrival with enthusiasm…

  2. Alan, not only do I admire your figures, but I also have that book and I found the tale of the Hessians in the '45 fascinating as well. I still have plans for "The Reluctant Wargame", but I am unsure of what I want that to look like now. Except there have to be Latin-speaking Hussars...

    1. It is such a fascinating tale. I would like to add some of the Hessian flavour to the games as well as things like the “ bagpipe “ battle. Perhaps your unit has to throw a certain number not to charge if subjected to taunting by enemy playing tunes about your cowardice. Perhaps the opposing forces need different victory conditions. Hmm lots to think about…

  3. Now they look excellent Alan. I particularly like the dismounted hussars and dragoons (?).
Not heard of Latin speaking hussars before, not having read that Duffy book (one of only two that I haven’t).

    1. They are my favourite figures too. The Latin thing is about a hussar conversing with a publican in Latin as it was the only language they both knew.

    1. I am a tad daunted by painting the new arrivals as 90 % of the army was professionally painted. I am going to give it a go…
