In this month’s 009 Society journal there is an article about the Airfix thatched cottage, an old friend of many of us. I enjoy the journal as it is full of interesting articles and fascinating projects. I really appreciated the article about building the Airfix cottage and upgrading it.
Recently I bought off eBay this conversion of two cottages made into a row. I bought it mainly because it reminded me of the cottage we stayed in at Farringdon on the first family holiday we had with the girls many moons ago. Here it is with some infantry combat group on patrol.
Hello there tradgardmastare,
ReplyDeleteThe old Airfix cottage eh? I wonder how many stricken table tops that has appeared on over the years? It was and is a lovely model and so useful!
The joined up version looks really nice and it is good to see the old Infantry Combat Group in action. If anyone ever made some moulds of these early Airfix figures and cast them in metal I would be all over them like a cheap suit!
All the best,
DC
Interesting you mention metal Airfix. I have some Acw figures that look like Airfix until you lift them and you discover they are metal! It is an odd feeling. No idea who cast them as I got them second hand.

DeleteI too have some Roman and ACW metal Airfix castings - home casts?
DeleteA classic model used for everything from Ancients to WW2
ReplyDeleteSo true, architecture for every occasion, and why not.
DeleteA beautiful model with so many possibilities for display!
ReplyDeleteQuite agree, lots of potential here.
DeleteAlan, they look good, and in the Westcountry you can still see terraces of thatched properties. Perfect for 20mm, and even larger scales if your agenda is to capture traditional 'toy soldier' wargaming.

Glad to know real life is mimicking Airfix:)
DeleteI was wondering about larger scales , I must give it a bash sometime.
That's a grand little conversion of an old favourite Alan.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Paul.
I was pleased to take someone’s work forward and give it new life here...
DeleteI’ve never seen this kit before - I guess it never made it over to North America. Would also do as a set for Midsomer Murders!
ReplyDeleteMidsomer Murders indeed. What was the availability of Airfix where and when you were growing up?
DeleteOne of my favourites for sure. I must do a version with roses round the door
ReplyDeleteSounds like the lure of model railways is calling Siren like...
DeleteA classic ... Still available as a Dapol model in the ex Airfix railway range

Indeed on both counts!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photo, Alan. My cottage is long gone but I'll definitely get a replacement.
ReplyDeleteRonnie
A nice modelling project for you to engage in.
