When walking around Perth I noticed this sign for the first time-
I was most intrigued by what it said especially the battle. I had never heard of it ! Later in the day I saw this painting and accompanying signage-

A part of Scotland I didn't make it to during my visits. You're lucky to live so close to so many interesting sites!

DeleteI am fortunate indeed. All accessible by public transport too!
I think I have heard of the Battle of the Ckans....probably via one of the innumerable Nigel Tranter historical novels I read at one time!
ReplyDeleteIt was new to me. Nigel Tranter , I had forgotten him. His books were everywhere once but not so visible these days.

There are similar surviving Silver Ball Hurling town (and St Ives beach) street ‘football’ / street ‘rugby’ events in St. Ives and in St. Columb Major in Cornwall - some great archive footage online. Most people wisely shutter or board up their shop and house windows for the day!
ReplyDeleteI must look for the footage. Shutters etc sounds a plan. At one time I had a set of rules, probably from the Arquebusier journal for renaissance or medieval street football. I was put off at the time because of a lack of civilian figures in suitable poses or to be converted. Good 54mm toy soldier project for you , or someone, Mark

Thanks, Alan. Nice to see you visiting my home town. We learned the story of the battle of clans in school, and Hal o' the Wynd who stepped in.
ReplyDeleteregards,
Tom
Interesting to hear you learned the story in school. I wonder if they still do?
