I left a comment on a recent post regarding how I would like to get better acquainted with current comics/graphic novels but am not sure where to begin at all. Any suggestions for a good read in terms of artwork and storyline would be great. Thanks in anticipation.
Paper Girls is great.
ReplyDelete"Ragnarok" by Walt Simonson might be in your wheelhouse.
ReplyDeleteThe first few volumes of "Lumberjanes" are hilarious.
'Goddamn this War' by Jacques Tardi is abt WWI.

There are three that continue the storyline of Tom Clancy's 'The Division' console game: NY Survival Guide, Extreme Malis and Broken Dawn. I am not a console player but I found these novels absolutely fascinating reads.
ReplyDeleteIntriguing, l will have a look at these…

My local city / town library has lots of graphic novels including a link to borrow some online during COVID / ongoing. The city/ town also has a comic shop which takes part in National Free Comic Day (September).
ReplyDeleteA couple I can recommend - Glass Town by Isabel Greenberg (Hardback Bronte juvenilia)
Maus book 1 and 2 about growing up with family stories of the Holocaust is quite powerful - read this about 30 years ago.
I know Maus , it is excellent. My eldest has Glass Town, somewhere, l need to check out the library an£ local comic shop indeed!

It really depends on what you are interested in. If you want to browse a few different comics I would suggest a trip to Deadhead comics opposite the Pear Tree in Edinburgh. Unbelievably still ran by Gaff after all these years.
ReplyDeleteHave you considered online comics? Lots of them about. Look at https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20021104 - if you don't like that one, scroll down and look at some of the other options! Also https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html Actually, there are too many around to list!
ReplyDeleteOnline comics , that’s a plan. I used , some time ago, read/ follow an online comic set in the world of Runequest.. It was most enjoyable. I can’t seem to find it now…

There is a one volume collection of Charleys war available. A beautifully written and illustrated story. Which I can never read without a feeling of anger and sadness.
