    1. I am glad you enjoyed the footage, I find it fascinating. I wonder what happened to the people in the film when the maelstrom of WW2 ? Take for instance the governor of Upper Austria who had a go driving the tankette. All the spectators, all the troops…
I shall put such melancholic thoughts aside and just enjoy the newsreels for themselves…

    2. My Dad was in the Irish Free State army in the late 1930's, after the Civil War in 1922 the country was still deeply divided between the Provisional Government and the Nationalists who wanted a Republic, there were fears the army would mutiny. When he left the army it wasn't safe for him to go home to Galway so in 1941 he crossed over to Glasgow and worked on building defence works before going down to London to work on emergency repairs during the Blitz. He told me there were big gangs of labourers, mostly Irish but also displaced men from all over Europe, who were housed in tented camps outside London, they would watch the bombing and doodlebugs through the night then in the morning were loaded into trucks and taken into the city to work on salvaging and making safe the damage of the night before.

  2. Thanks for sharing. Im combining marks little soldiers with Dinky 1930s military vehicles for Sylvania v Borduria. British Vehicles shown were quite comprehensively covered by Dinky 151a etc

  3. Fascinating interwar mix of WW1 and ‘Modern’, the coal scuttle helmets of Irish, even a touch of Flash Gordon with the Airships ...

  4. Yes I'm going to do some research on the airships. I had thought the zeppelins had reached the zenith then nadir of lighter than air warfare. That they were finished, but then cavalry in these films too.
