A most enjoyable game was had today, with me umpiring-
Basque infantry advance through the woods.Basque cavalry and knights advancing across the low hills.
Confused melee involving Basque and Frankish mounted troops.
Frankish spearmen advance to meet the enemy.
Basque knights ready to charge…
A dark age bird’s eye view of the battle.
Basque infantry still in that wood!
Not very good photo above and below this sentence.
The Franks conceded as a number of their units were destroyed or demoralised. We will re fight this next week with a few tweaks of the rules and the players changing which side they command.
Nice to see these classic figures in action .
ReplyDeleteI agree . Having got them onto individual bases it gives much more flexibility to their gaming use.

I love seeing a real old school game. Forgive my ignorance but what is DBV? Some of those Frankish figures have a right fantastical look about them.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure, I enjoy seeing such games too.
DeleteDBV was/is an unfinished set of skirmish rules by Phil Barker available on line for free. They seem to not be there anymore. Any way my friend has worked on them to make them playable . They give an enjoyable game without too much to think of. We are continuing to tweak them as issues arise.

Nice to see a different force portrayed. Don’t think I’ve ever seen Basques on the Wargames table before (other than as part of a wider force, eg in the SCW).
ReplyDeletePassed through Roncesvalles/Roncevaux many years ago after driving through St Jean de Pued de Port.

I thought so too. We all use the same armies and it is fun to field something different. Small world re Roncesvaux.
