Manoeuvres how are they scored and how do you win?

Been watching interwar Pathe footage of manoeuvres. Noticed the umpires. How do they score the participants and how does one win?

  1. There's a bit during the training in England sequence of the David Niven wartime film, The Way Ahead, which depicts this. An umpire observes men silhouetted against the skyline within range of the enemy and declares them dead. Umpires or Observer/Controllers are they are known today are experienced soldiers who can make a quick judgement as to the effect of fire, chances of a successful attack, etc. Nowadays the casualty assessment is often done with computer aids and laser-tag type kit.

  2. Most interesting comment, thanks for posting it. I will try not to imagine my interwar Britains in laser tag kit :)😀

  3. This interview with Irish Army officer and gamer Tom Egan throws more light on military methods of war gaming in the field: https://youtu.be/jj3ukRtzKlg
Yes that would spoil the interwar look! The kit is very distinctive and SFish!
