Been watching some footage of the Albanian Army of the twenties and thirties as background to my MLS project. I found the mix of uniforms fascinating , ceremonial and otherwise, not to mention the equipment used. So do have a look yourself and enjoy.

ReplyDeleteAnd the Russian shock detachment of King Zogu, with the help of which he carried out a coup d'état)))
ReplyDeleteThe uniform has a very strong Italian influence and quite a bit of Russian style.
P.S. And we got snow today.
Sorry! First I inserted a comment in Russian
Most interesting, thanks.

Absolutely brilliant, Ruritania lives! Man of Tin is probably making the Albanian Girl Guides as I type!
ReplyDeleteMany years ago I read a magazine article about King Zog,s son, who had apparently taken up tobacco growing in Rhodesia. King Sit was quite a character, seem to recall that during an attempted assassination attempt as he left the Krol Opera House in Vienna, he produced a pistol and returned fire!!!
The Albanian Girl Guides are a recent development in the 1990s - 2000s (post Communism / Young Pioneers?) with a very cool Guide trefoil and double headed eagle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_Scouts_of_Albania
DeleteI’m not sure if Guiding existed in Albania in the 1910s-40s - a bit of artistic or historical licence then? Surely Borduria and Sylvania (and Ostmerk) had Girl Guides and Scouts and young pioneers?
Mark Man of TIN - Boy Scouting existed in Albania from 1920 until King Zog banned it in 1937! Ji Gati! (Be Prepared) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beslidhja_Skaut_Albania
DeleteInteresting anecdotes James. Fascinating scouting info!

King Sit should obviously be King Zog. This artificial intelligence is frightening, it got it correctly the first time, and then printed Sit.....which makes no sense at all!
ReplyDeleteI am a martyr to typo and destructive text 😂

Odd to think that it could have been all-round sportsman, CB Fry, who could have been handing out those colours. At least according to the man himself, he was offered the crown of Albania. Could such a thing have happened in your Mitteleuropa Alan? What's a chap to do after representing his country at cricket AND togger, playing in the FA Cup Final, playing for the Barbars, AND equaling the world long-jump record, what?!
ReplyDeleteI have a big C B Fry biography somewhere but had forgotten about the offer to him. I do like the possibilities it might offer…
