Original Lyrics by By Reverend John H. Hopkins, Jr.
We Three Kings of Orient are,
Bearing gifts we traverse afar,
Field and fountain,
Moor and mountain,
Following yonder Star.
Chorus:
O Star of Wonder, Star of Night,
Star with Royal Beauty bright,
Westward leading,
Still proceeding,
Guide us to Thy perfect Light.
[Gaspard]
Born a King on Bethlehem plain,
Gold I bring to crown Him again,
King for ever,
Ceasing never
Over us all to reign.
(Chorus)
[Melchior]
Frankincense to offer have I,
Incense owns a Deity nigh:
Prayer and praising
All men raising,
Worship Him God on High.
(Chorus)
[Balthazar]
Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom;–
Sorrowing, sighing,
Bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.
(Chorus)
Glorious now behold Him arise,
King, and God, and Sacrifice;
Heav’n sings Hallelujah:
Hallelujah the earth replies.
(Chorus)

Tradgardmastare,
ReplyDeleteIts one of my favourites as well, particularly as it allows me to sing in my bass baritone and not strain singing in a higher register.
All the best,
Bob
I recall many happy schoolboy variations on this interesting narrative hymn … with many varieties of more modern transport than a camel suggested.
ReplyDeleteInteresting military history fact or link, the author of this carol delivered the eulogy at the funeral of US President Ulysses S. Grant in 1885. (Wikipedia source)
