We Three Kings- my favourite carol

Original Lyrics by By Reverend John H. Hopkins, Jr.

We Three Kings of Orient are,
Bearing gifts we traverse afar,
Field and fountain,
Moor and mountain,
Following yonder Star.

Chorus:
O Star of Wonder, Star of Night,
Star with Royal Beauty bright,
Westward leading,
Still proceeding,
Guide us to Thy perfect Light.

[Gaspard]
Born a King on Bethlehem plain,
Gold I bring to crown Him again,
King for ever,
Ceasing never
Over us all to reign.

(Chorus)

[Melchior]
Frankincense to offer have I,
Incense owns a Deity nigh:
Prayer and praising
All men raising,
Worship Him God on High.

(Chorus)

[Balthazar]
Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom;–
Sorrowing, sighing,
Bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.

(Chorus)

Glorious now behold Him arise,
King, and God, and Sacrifice;
Heav’n sings Hallelujah:
Hallelujah the earth replies.

(Chorus)

  1. Tradgardmastare,

Its one of my favourites as well, particularly as it allows me to sing in my bass baritone and not strain singing in a higher register.

    All the best,

    Bob

  2. I recall many happy schoolboy variations on this interesting narrative hymn … with many varieties of more modern transport than a camel suggested.

    1. Interesting military history fact or link, the author of this carol delivered the eulogy at the funeral of US President Ulysses S. Grant in 1885. (Wikipedia source)
