Saturday saw me having a wee wander in Edinburgh. I decided to pop up Lothian Road and see the reopened Filmhouse. It played an important part in my youth when one could see films for 50p on a Wednesday afternoon. I went a lot, for at fifty pence you had nothing to lose . I digress. Anyway across from the Filmhouse is Wonderland . It was always a great shop but one for modellers rather than wargamers being filled with a cornucopia of model railway, radio control and kit wonders plus toys. It hadn’t been graced by my presence for ages and l can tell you it now has loads more for the wargamer in terms of Perry, Wargames Atlantic and other 28mm plastic figures. An excellent selection, well worth a browse. My plan was to see if l could get a wee manageable project in terms of task and price. I waited to be hooked in , I was open to a hobby dérive if you like . The idea was to browse in the 1/72 plastic toy soldier bit of the shop. And so l did . Periods and choice galore. In the ended was taken by a box of Strelets figures ( Marmite like you either like loath them, l find them charming if a little crude occasionally ) which you see the box of above . WW2 Romanians. They would serve really well as interwar imaginations figures for a Transilvanian Army. I bought them for £7:50:for 48 figures with ideas forming in my head. The purchase reminded me of fun browsing for toy soldiers in my local post office in the Sixties where the post mistress was kind and patient.
The figures unboxed, washed in detergent and drying prior to painting. I was reminded of Craig David’s song 7 days but something similar “ bought them on a Saturday, painted them on a Sunday by Monday we fighting on the tabletop…”
Beginning the process of painting and planning what to do with them…Saturday.
Painted , given a dark wash and drying . The helmet and cap figures would serve as regular infantry with the fur hatted chaps being militia.
A coat of gloss varnish whist still on the sprue to seal everything on Sunday.
Cut off the sprue and bases painted, Monday morning early. If I had possessed suitable mdf bases the task would have been finished but after a hunt l realised I needs to order some…
So here we are Wednesday morning early, waiting for the bases to arrive, the figures then being based and used on the table. A cheap, fun wee project to lift the spirit and offer some gaming fun. Opponents will be interwar Austrian imagination and or The Duchy of Volare Cantare…

You could always just use pennies.
ReplyDeleteI like StrelitSR the War of Austrian Succession figures are particularly good.
I looked at them in the shop and was impressed. I do prefer the chunky style of figures better however.

Great little project Alan. I like Strelets figures too; lots of character.
ReplyDeleteThanks. They are splendid are they not.

Alan, some splendid painting!
ReplyDeleteI like the Strelets figures, especially the chunkier ones. For opposition, there are many options WW2 Hungarians, Italians and Finnish, all in winter clothing and in the same style, as well as Soviets in early helmets. Also, several WW1 or RCW would match - Austrians and Soviets in those pointy hats.
Neil
Thanks.
DeleteI definitely prefer the chunky style. I ordered some Austro Hungarians in gas mask but got an email saying they were sold out. I can’t seem to find the AH ones for sale at all. I fear I started this wee project too late. AH honved set is unavailable too in the uk as far as I can see. Looking on E bay there are single strips of some figures about but l am reluctant to pay the price , plus postage. I have the WW2 Italians in winter dress ordered ( ideal for Duchy of Volare Cantare) and will look next time Inam in Edinburgh for any chunky style figures in Wonderland, having my eye on the Winter Hungarians . Really enjoyed working on the figures and looking forward to gaming with them. I have other manufacturers 1/72 figures but they look very tall and thin alongside my Strelets.

There is seemingly 1 box of the AH wearing gas masks in Hannants
DeleteExcellent... I love the idea of a wargames derive!
ReplyDeleteFun at pocket money ,almost, prices imho.

I miss the days when there were shops such as Beatties at Holborn which stocked a huge range of model railways, kits, boxes of figures, paints, etc, etc, to provide inspiration and immediate purchase. It's not the same browsing a website, registering, passwords, entering your delivery details, then endless emails telling you your order has been picked, packed, posted, delivered, did we do a good job. Sorry, rant over!
ReplyDeleteI quite agree. I have been seduced by the instant and browsing via the ether. Great I admit in one sense but a big loss in another. Another rant over.

Lovely stuff Alan, proof that a small project can be completed really quickly if you keep it simple! If only I could do that...
ReplyDeleteI am the last to preach “ Maintenance of the aim” but l am coming round to wee projects and tiny tickable targets…

Wonderland is an excellent shop. Not sure if there are many others now that can match it.
ReplyDeleteI fear you are right in your second point. Certainly not round here. The diversity of stock was so impressive.

Niche but fun for a Transylvanian interbellum Balkans edge army (with any Count vampire goth edge?) I’m glad a well named (Wonderland!) model shop browse turned out so well.
ReplyDeleteNiche but fun, story of my blog 😀
ReplyDeleteAlways glad of an imagination to lift the spirts.
A regular browsing, even if not buying, will hopefully occur from now on.
Goth, Wes Anderson, Patrick Leigh Fermor, Ruritania, etc all mixed together with some splendid paprika …

Great shop. I've been there a couple of times while visiting Edinburgh. And to Harburn Hobbies.
ReplyDeleteIt is, even more so now. HH is a most enjoyable visit too.

Great idea to just browse and see what takes your fancy.

It was great fun and something l would recommend especially if the financial out lay is very reasonable.
