I haven’t ever read the book nor did I see the earlier film ( one with Sting in it) but I was most intrigued by the trailer of the current one. I missed the film in the cinema but bought the dvd. I watched it for the first time last night and was amazed at the look it. Spectacular to say the least. I really enjoyed it but it raised many questions. Have you seen it and what did you make of it?
Hi ALAN - I've seen the first DUNE Movie and it is great- well recommended and not dated at all- still stands up as an epic Sci-Fi movie. Cheers. KEV.

DeleteI liked it. I'm interested to hear from soemone who deosn't know the story, did you feel it worked as something in its own right? It's really the set-up for the next film/s so that could seem a bit of a let-down if you don't know what's coming.
ReplyDeleteI did think they could have done more with Yueh- his treachery is such a big part of this section and I felt his motives and struggle were quite downplayed. I didn't like that they made him a faith healer/alt medicine practitioner. The science/faith collision between his work and the Bene Gesserit seems like a better angle to take and also feeds the speculation about possibility for treachery with the suspicion falling on Jessica- the confusion over who was responsible for the duke's death was largely ignored and its a really interesting factor to the book. Especially for people who haven't encountered Dune before they could have kept people guessing along with the characters.
The only other thing that bothered me was Kynes. Not the gender swap (if you're going to swap any character's gender in Dune it really can only be Kynes. Not that I think it was necessary, plenty of strong female characters in there already but hey, makes no difference to me either way) but her death scene. In the book it's a very poetic becoming one with the desert, the fight scene in the film didn't add a great deal (lots of fights already) but robbed the moment a bit of its sentiment.
I felt the film certainly worked in its own right. I was left looking forward to the next part with eager anticipation. Some things I didn’t quite understand but that didn’t stop me enjoying it. Thanks for your interesting paragraphs on the characters you mention.
DeleteI haven't seen either film (although the 80s one is on Amazon and I might get round to it). The new one looks very good. I recently re-read the book after many, many years and it held up really well... definitely worth reading.

DeleteI was really excited when I heard they had remade Dune. I saw it and loved it. The film followed the book pretty accurately if there is such a thing for a fantasy. Can I recommend you read the books because they really help explain the film and of course the planned sequels. The first three books are well recommended and I am really looking forward to the sequels as Paul begins to assert himself.

DeleteI went to see it in early January. It felt rather strange sitting in a mostly empty theater for the first time in nearly two years. The cinematography was excellent, and vividly brought back the original story I read a very long time ago. Of course, A battle fought by troops in the distant future with weapons of several millennia past, was ironic, to say the least. Still, I would highly recommend it. Let us hope the next one doesn't destroy the magic of the first!

DeleteI’ve never read the books, or seen the original film. I enjoyed the movie and hope they make a sequel. I have a friend who is a self-proclaimed movie critic, and he tried to rain on my parade. I told him “Look, I got to see a sci-fi adventure with my wife on one side and my dad on the other. And I only paid $5 (it was a discount night at the theater). I’m happy.”
ReplyDeleteI’m glad you put your friend in his place! Great price for a movie. Light years ago it was 50p on Wednesday afternoons at the cinema. I went almost every week and saw loads of films. It was great.
