Flats

 Found these yesterday when tidying-

Wondering if they might make a little project before tackling something larger like finishing off Eric Knowles Turks and getting them ready for DBR..

I am thinking of basing the French and German zinnfiguren for the Portable Wargame and perhaps One Hour Wargames. However I am undecided as whether to strip the figures of paint and start again or just touch them up. I like the idea of taking forward old figures with their paint jobs and I am well aware I could not manage a better effort. So l am inclined to touch up missing paint etc. Secondly wonder what basing would work well with flats. Not sure if realistic basing is the vibe or rather flocking or simple green paint job. As ever your thoughts would be most welcome.

  1. Those are lovely and just right for a PW game, with 2d style scenery - personally I'd just have plain green bases.

  2. Lovely figures oozing with age, I'm with MJT on the basing.

  3. I'm biased regarding bases as I tend to leave everything plain green - I use Vallego Olive Green. As for painting, I basically follow a series of steps: If they are compatible with current figures or are a distinct and separate project I just touch the paintwork up. If they are incompatible with other figures in a project but can be easily brought up to spec without a total repaint, I do what is needed; if they are a lousy paint job or cannot be made compatible I repaint from scratch.

  4. With the proviso that old toy soldiers are not really my thing, I would suggest minimalist, plain gloss green for the bases - they are not "realistic" models, so no point in a "realistic" base in my opinion.

  5. Most of the paint is intact so, in most cases I'd leave it and add embellishments. I would paint over the faces as I like more fine detail there. You could add washes and highlights to the existing paint schemes or just leave as is. Varnishing is an additional option, gloss, semi-gloss or semi mat or mat. But no, I wouldn't make unnecessary work for myself by stripping paint and entirely redoing them.

  6. Great find! I'm in the touch them up and simple green base camp.

  7. As someone who has been trying to paint this play-worn patchy lead patina on plastic figures, I would endorse what the others say. Keep the paintwork, patch or repair and varnish if you have to and especially keep that toy look with individual green (gloss?) bases rather than flock. They will see action quicker that way too. Charming figures, especially the Chasseurs d’Alpin.

  8. Lovely looking figures something about flats that makes me want to dive in and get loads of them!! Anyway I would just touch up the paint and leave as much original as you can, the bases would have to be plain green, much like all my basing work is!!

  9. At the risk of being just another voice in the chorus, I vote for simple green bases all the way.

  11. Another vote for minimal improvement work and a plain painted base. And a semi-gloss finish.
