It was thirty years ago today...

Thirty years ago today or so I attended the funeral of a friend. He had been one of the celebrants at our wedding and someone who gave good advice as well as being excellent company. In order to help get through the days post funeral I started to build a rockery where I was living at the time. The rough map and plant list are from then as well as the book.

Very recently I started on a wee rockery here in the Duchy. I have loved Alpines for years and have some containers filled with them but wanted a rockery too. I had been removing turf for this project some time ago and getting ready. So on May Day the girls and worked together on it. It was diverting and enjoyable and a good project in light of our recent bereavement. It brought back memories too of all those years ago and my friend. The project is not finished but has made a good start, perhaps I will complete in the post funeral days this time too...

  1. That’s a nice way of marking someone’s passing, especially doing the work with your daughters.

    1. When I built the one thirty years ago I did it on my own with encouragement and support from Jan. This time with my daughters helping. We will move it forward together over the coming weeks.

  2. Have always thought a garden rockery is like having a world in miniature, low growing plants, distinctive rock features, full of interesting textures and colours.

    1. My feelings exactly. I recall going through the one at the Botanic Gsrdens Edinburgh as a child where the rock garden landscape towered above me. It is still a wondrous place.

  3. Lovely project, and a good way of remembering... and that which is remembered never truly dies:)

  4. I second all of the above.

I've always had a fondness for rockeries/rock gardens. They are like a little world of their own.
