ACW regimental rules suggestions for 28mm

Just back from my friend’s from our first acw game in years. The Foundry rules didn’t work for us- Bull run to Gettyberg. We got them in 2011 and hadn’t used them much . The figure collection of my friend has grown a lot since then.

His collection is in 28mm, forty mm  square bases of four figures, twenty figures in a unit. This is for a regiment. Looking for suggestions for rules, can you help?

    1. A thought but I don’t like having to buy loads of period specific supplements.

  2. I must confess that the last ACW rules I used were "Circa 1863" or was it "Airfix".
    And good fun too!

  3. We used Black Powder to fight our last ACW campaign and much fun was had - though not necessarily by both sides at the same time. BP is very tweakable - we adopted some of the special rules from the supplement but otherwise played straight - basically to make cavalry behave as ACW cavalry. BP is really a multi-player game - two or three a side - for fairly large games - we play on a 14 x 6 table. It works well for those sorts of games. It works far less well for one player a side games - and for tables less than 5 feet wide/8 feet ling you need to halve distances (and ideally frontages... as we did for our climactic ACW 5 a side game).

  4. If you're looking for quick rules, Battle Cry makes for a quick easy game. As infantry units are made up of 4 bases, if you have enough units the 5th bases could be used to make extra units.

  5. Featherstones original Horse and Musket rules are more than adequate and definitely Old School.

    Available from Spencer Smith.

    1. Thanks. I played Johnny Reb a lot in the early eighties at uni in 15mm , it was a great system.

  7. I may be late to the party, but when looking at the website for Jacklex figures I noticed they have a set of free ACW rules by Andy Callan : https://www.jacklexminiatures.com/files/acw-rules.pdf
( I gather Andy also did the rules in the 'Paperboys' ACW book, but not sure if they are the same set.. )
    Hope that's of some use!
