A strange week

 The day after my birthday Jan would have been 62. When we met it was an amusing conceit to have birthdays a day apart. However it often resulted in hers being sort of left behind or conflated into a joint celebration. I wish we had gone for one of us having an “ official “ birthday in the summer but Jan wasn’t up for that.

For my daughters particularly it is a strange roller coaster of a week. The highs of Wednesday moving to the depths of Thursday whilst gearing up for Mother’s Day on Sunday. To my mind it has become so commercialised and it cannot be got away from , even in the e mail inbox  where one is asked to opt out of  the advertising.

In other matters rebasing has sort of stalled but hopefully will restart next week. East Tradgardland has gained some recruits from the lead pile in the shape of woodsmen with bows, not to mention irregular cavalry. I have been trying to resist the 20mm Early Wars Miniatures interwar British vehicles which look beautiful. It is as if Pathe News footage of 1920/30s manoeuvres have come to life.

Yesterday l had planned a day away as a distraction but ended up staying locally and began the process of getting the garden geared up for another year. The sun was out, it was not too cold and it was a diverting experience which has whetted my appetite for further endeavours.

  1. A difficult time, a rollercoaster as you say but it looks as if you have enjoyed your birthday time together as a family.
    Mother’s Day is becoming more of a commercialised thing but remains resolutely a handmade card and (slightly) burnt breakfast toast in bed sort of a thing in our family.

  2. Alan;
    Sandy turns 60 this year. I don't know exactly what I'm going to do since it's not until October. But your post does make me think and reflect back and I thank you for that. I wish we were coming back to Scotland this year, instead of going to Norway, but that's a purely selfish thing on my part. My best to you and your family. Visiting your Duchy is still talked of in my own Duchy. :-)

    All the best;
    Eric

    1. Really wish you were coming back to Scotland too but Norway should be fascinating. Exciting military history too. Lots of time to get ready for Sandy’s 60th. Would she like an army painted for her? Maybe not😂

  3. A rollercoaster indeed. At least you and your girls have each other, as well as the memory of Jan.

    Best wishes!

  4. It will be a poignant day but you have already cast part of your mind at least to looking forward to Spring. There is of course also some comfort in immersing yourself in the deeds of Tradgardland.
    Take care of yourself and your girls

  5. I hope that memories of the good times are some consolation for you all. A friend of mine who's birthday was 26th December got tired of his birthday taking second place and decreed that his birthday would now take place on 26th June. Apparently his family went along with it though I gather there was some confusion about his date of birth later on!

  6. A warning indeed. My mother’s birthday was the 28th December and she always felt that about her birthday , throughout her life.
