Fantasy gaming a level lower than Dragon Rampant- any ideas?

I am looking for suggestions for fantasy gaming ( Middle Earth mainly) using a few figures a side. I am not too enamoured with Songs of Blades and Heroes by the way. All suggestions welcome.

  1. Original 1st edition Warhammer might duut your needs. You can roll your profiles and there is no need for hordes of figures. Or you could also look at LOTR Strategy battlegame. Can be used with a few figures too.

    Cheers, Ross

  2. What about Mordheim or the Savage worlds showdown rules?

  3. Maybe Brink Of Battle with fantasy supplement (Epic Heroes)?

OR Warrior Heroes Legends from 2HW, nice game if you like Chain Reaction system.

OR Goal System Delves a dice pool game.

  4. Otherworld skirmish rules. Recently published, and aimed at recreating old-school fantasy wargaming.

    1. You can find it either at Otherworld Miniatures, or at Crooked Dice (same guys who publish 7TV).

  9. If you're interested, Middle Earth skirmish using SAGA rules are available on line. Some of the lists are in German, so you need to be careful or language savvy. Contact me if this interests you.

  10. Bladestorm? I tried it a few times back in the 90s when it was first published, and found it (even then, in a gaming age that was more forgiving) unplayable and overly complex. Have you tried it?

  12. Open Combat could be your thing. Newly published 2nd edition

You build your own heroes and monsters from the scratch (and it's easy to do) meaning you can use any miniature you own.

  14. I did game with Warhammer- 1st Edition way back in the late 1980's-early 90's...not big armies- though the rules did work for battles between my Dwarfs against my Mates 'Skaven' (The Dreaded Rats)...WH would be OK if you can still find a set of rules and the Compendium. Regards. KEV.

  16. Kaptain Kobold at the Stronghold Rebuilt has just posted an AAR using Battlesworn. Very few figures were involved.

  17. Take a look at the Osprey rules "En Garde!". The rules are a small skirmish level. They're specifically for 16th-18th c., but the engine, like Lion Rampant, is pretty versatile. They're a revision of the older "Ronin" skirmish rules by the same author. "En Garde!" has an appendix for fantasy rules.

  18. Chainmail! Simple and wonderful, with rules for big battles or Man-to-Man(or beast, or dwarf or orc, etc...)
