Very interesting read .
Finally my “Double armed man” unit for ECW gaming. Minifigs pikemen with added bows and quivers.
Interesting articles and neat conversions - useful information for my ArmaDad’s Army 1588 project (a few bowmen amongst the Tudorbethan / Elizabethan Cornish local muster) and also a conversion challenge for a few medieval bowmen figures amongst my Peter Laing ECW units
ReplyDeleteGood things came out of the post for you Mark, excellent to hear.

P.S it is fascinating and l would like to see the odd ECW archer on the tabletop…
In 1642 bowyers and fletchers petitioned Charles I to fight the war with archery. William Nead complained that the only encouragement he received for his double-armed man was from God. The most entertaining reference is in the 1620s when Norfolk and Suffolk urged the trained bands to revive archery to 'amaze and trouble' any invader! And in passing, I'm quite sad to see that the Ancient Company of Longbowstringmakers is now defunct. Perhaps a tad over-specialised?
