Yesterday I caught up with a friend for lunch . I hadn’t seen him for ages and a most enjoyable time ensued. We met in the cafe of the National Portrait Gallery. I’ve been coming here since childhood when it was the National Museum of Scotland where I was enthralled by a live size reconstruction of a Celtic chariot and a a big model of a broch not to mention the finds on show.
Anyway I was early and after reading in St Andrews Square gardens l popped into the gallery for a look. As ever l was drawn to the William Hole historical paintings both the scale and the detail-
