Carl Rochling
Ed kindly identified my painting from yesterday as being by Carl Rochling and pertaining to the 1806/07 period in the Napoleonic Wars. The style was familiar to me and sure enough,after some searching I found this on the bookshelf-

ReplyDeleteFascinating that these are described in the Wikipedia entry as "children's books". The massed ranks picture style of the pictures in the Wikipedia entry reminds me a little of N C Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth's militray history painter father and his iconic Nationmakers painting

Sadly faced with such stirring illustrations my Airfix childhood brain then starts thinking of the Washingtons Army figures by Airfix ... others minds would go straight to Spencer Smiths etc.
Wyeth, another great painter indeed. Airfix Washington Army, yes , I remember them well...

For Nine pounds or so. Came out in 1981 , a wee but lovely book to look at...
